It's the late 1840s and Lucinda Lisle, a well-to-do young woman, has run away from her abusive husband, taking their five-year-old son Stanley with them. The best help her father is willing to provide her is to install her in a strange, remote house on the edge of a moor. This reading opens as Lucinda and Stanley settle into their first night.
